English or American English ?

Found this cute quiz at red-enclave , thought I'do it for fun. Here are my results.

Hmmm no wonder the sales rep in the shops in Europe keep thinking I'm American and I have to insist that 'no sorry I'm Libyan' ( could never understand why they asked in the first place, petty conversation?) ....and here I was all this time thinking I had a British accent :) and now I learn it's yankee *sigh* where on earth did I pick that up !

Your Linguistic Profile:

30% Yankee
10% Dixie

Try it ! What kind of American Engish do you speak?

PS Khadija I'm working on that pet -tag thanks :)

well highlander, when I was in Austrailia, i was mistaken for an Irishman and Welshman while in Dubai was thought to be American

just shows people are almost always rubbish with accents

also are there dialects in libya or does everyone sound similar

Here in UK there are lots of variations

weird how we all seem to have a little bit of dixie (?) I understand for those who actually live in the US like you Twosret and Tarhooni ...but I never set foot there.. methinks red_enclave is right must be TV ( thanks to all the digital stuff we get nowadays).

Alan yes in Libya we do have variable accents. The most obvious ones are in the East and the WEst of Libya i.e. if you were from the Tripolitanian or the Benghazi area. Then there are tiny variations in intonation, for example in Zawia about 50 km outside Tripoli or in the south. But we all understand each other very well.

In the UK I can't understand when the Scots people start talking to fast or some of the accents the Asian cab drivers use either.

Yes red_enclave Libyans say bahi to mean good or ok . However linguistically the word bahi is very much classical Arabic, which other Arab countries have dropped from their spoken linguo and only use is the printed matter.
