Love

I realised that all you 'warriors' are still tired of the war stories all over the media, and several of you have expressed a wish to continue with the light hearted posts. Well I'm still heavy hearted about the Middle East too and I'm afraid I might say things that I won't be able to take back ever. That is why I agree, I 'll give you an encore , a post about LOVE , but you have to keep your end of the bargain and not chicken out ;)

So apparently tomorrow 12th of August is Romance Day , and the 16th of August is True Love Forever Day ???? Who invented these things ?

Do you believe in true love, or is it an outdated concept ? Since most of us are single here apart from Maya and Chris in Manitoba, if I remmember well .. then there should be some interesting remarks.

I was a fervent believer in true love, soulmates etc... but now ... I'm kind of ambivalent can anyone prove me wrong ?
what is the most romantic thing you ever did / was done to you ? and what will you do this week now that you know these two important dates are coming LOL.

Update 12-8-06

True love holds no grudges ...

A few quotes:

"The heart has its reasons that reason does not know." - Pascal

"In the arithmetic of love, one plus one equals everything, and two minus one equals nothing." - Mignon McLaughlin

"Love sought is good, but given unsought is better." -William Shakespeare

"They do not love that do not show their love." -William Shakespeare

"Absence sharpens love, presence strengthens it." - Thomas Fuller

One for the Arabs:

"And think not you can guide the course of love. For love, if it finds you worthy, shall guide your course." - Kahlil Gibran

And one for the cynical:

"Love is the delusion that one woman differs from another." -H. L. Mencken

UmAminah Pride or Love ?that is an interesting question. Remember the Arab proverb يضرب الحب شو بذل؟
I guess that explains it ...
once you feel more ذل
then حب
or even suspect it :) ...then ...

In the previous discussion, I liked the contribution of Ghazi Gheblawi; if I were a young single British of Arab origin I would certainly be interested in him :). However, I wish to comment his unwillingness "to wake up one day to find himself hooked up with what looks like Alien".
This is very well said and certainly has some validity. Every woman who respects her partner (and herself) will make efforts to be good-looking. (And every man, for that matter; when arguing with fans of Michael Moore, I often mention that I'll buy no wisdom from a guy who looks the way Moore does.)
Also, there are stupid girls who distort their face with tons of makeup and work hard to build a body which can last only in a Barbie doll. When their man discovers their true image and is disappointed, who is to blame? In cultures allowing premarital sex, the moment of truth is often the morning after the first night spent together.
But truth has also another side. I hope Ghazi will soon find the woman of his dreams. Initially, she may look glorious, but the late 20s will bring the first unwanted changes of her body. Would he insist that she tortures herself with diets and exercise in a vain attempt to discover the fountain of eternal youth? (Such an attempt is thought to have caused the cardiac arrest that sent Terri Schiavo into persistant vegetative state.)
When she carries his babies, they will deform her figure and turn her veins into ugly knotted cables. After they are born, they will suck away what he had liked in her breasts.
Finally, at about 40, Nature will turn off her fertility. This has biological sense: more babies at this age can easily kill the mother, and she must stay alive to bring up her youngest ones. But without the hormones, her body will further lose shape and her skin will become dry and wrinkled.
At that time, some men divorce their wives and find new, younger partners. This also has biological sense: a new young wife means more babies, more copies of his genes.
But I still want to believe in true love, as is said at Christian weddings, in good and bad days, in health and disease, the two will be a whole, until death makes them part. (I guess there must be an analogous saying at Muslim weddings, is it so?)
Eh well, all of us know happy old couples.

redenclave never heard of them either - so you can't cook eh ?

Maya I know what Ghazi is referring too, Libyan women have gotten into the unfortunate habit of totally letting themselves go once the honeymoon is over. It's like now that she is married she does not need to seduce him anymore. And to be honest many men have fallen into that trap... :(

I liked your descrition of a woman's advance and various stages of life. I always say that my man should love me whether I had lost my beauty or not just like in the Christian marriage wows. We do have something similar in Islam. I think it is a Qur'anic verse to the effect that spouses ( ie the male and the female partner) are meant to cover each other like a garment and care for each other and something about there being love and mercy between them etc... which implies that you protect each other and love each other no matter what .
Hmm something to add to my list or do I already have it ?

I still want to believe in true love , maybe that's why I'm still single ...

Hi NBA if any hot blooded woman saw those two men who came to my 'rescue' her hormones would go in overdrive and Brad Pitt would look like a mere scarecrow next to that , those guys got the brains and the looks ;) unfortunately one is taken lol ( someone beat me there ) and the other makes a wonderful brother. But I am grateful they are there !

As for the Libyan hotties , problem is despite many neglecting themselves after marriage, they are such hotties that their men stay because they can't get enough of their talent lol. Also when they decide to dress up for an occasion they look so much like out of this world superstars that they totally eclipse anything the men will ever see ( ask anyone who has attended a Libyan weding ) . I was at a party yesterday and there was this 80 yr old woman, in silk , jewels , henna in her hair, kohl on her eyes and she was laughing from ear to ear when they told her that her hubby was waiting outside to take her home and that exceptionally he brought the car tonight ( she lives 5 minutes walk) because she was so stunning he was jealous the men will oggle her. You know what she said ? " he knows what's waiting for him!" and all those ladies were chuckling like schoolgirls I swear I was shocked lol. Never underestimate the Libyan hotties - I guess they know how to make a man loose his mind ....

I had seen those quotes before but I like that one :)

"A woman has the last word in any argument.
Anything a man says after that is the beginning of a new argument."
Reminds me of Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus book.

Did you read it ? if so what do you think ?

Well NBA you can ask Adam what he thinks of the Libyan Eclipse ;)
