I definitely can't carry my 20" iMac around lol iMac is distinguished for its superior performance and integrating everything within the widescreen flat panel.Hannuhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07277562554072670167noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5760993.post-1137065205583219912006-01-12T13:26:00.000+02:002006-01-12T13:26:00.000+02:007mada, even before the sanctions were lifted we ha...7mada, even before the sanctions were lifted we had the latest electronics because they were brought in from the UAE by the tujar el shanta ( LOL don't know how to say that in English). I find that the prices are more reasonable and affordable than in London. Laptop prices differ according to the brand if you want a top of the range it could be as much as over 3000 Dinars or if you wanted a simple one it could be as low as 1500 LD.
Desktop computer prices have gone down immensely in the last year. My old pentium 3 is quasi worthless now even though I bought the whole thing including 17 inch monitor DVD, RW-CD etc... for over 2000 LD and that's without the UPS and the printer and the electricity transformer.
Cellphones and laptops are imported from Dubai because you find the Arabic keypad on both there and this is important for the Libyan consumer. I thought that was a minus point in the UK. I bought a cellphone for 450 pounds only to find the keypad Arabic-less. I thought they should cater to that part as there are many Arabs citizens and visitors to the UK.

Of course after the sanctions were lifted it is even easier to access these things as the price of roundabout travel would not have to be factored into the price tag. Plus the tax laws have been amended a year ago.

What I've noticed though that the digital camera is popular too and its prices have come down, but the ipod is not hip here yet, they still like the usual mp3 players, and though 80% of the youth have cellphones (that's my calculation I could be wrong ). No one much cares for PDAs except those totally wired like yours truely , so an iMac , or Palm or phone PC are still in the top range of prices. Plasma TV and flat screen are available but still a bit expensive ( ahem) and people have not seen the 'need' for them yet. Doesn't go with our Marbu3a I guess and hey what's wrong with out good old TVs.

Now get that passport ready and come and visit quick :)Highlanderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16532761296990891687noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5760993.post-1137061670846018912006-01-12T12:27:00.000+02:002006-01-12T12:27:00.000+02:00Hi Thea , this is Highlander :) not Khadija but th...Hi Thea , this is Highlander :) not Khadija but that's allright ( assume that was a typo). Although my experience has been positive , there is no reason not to be careful. As for road blocks, women are never asked to come out of the car. Everyone is usually looked at and waived through slowly. As you've noticed women do not even fill out their ownn gas tank here .

With regards to entertainment, the rock cafe in Gargaresh usually offers live music - I think the expats dance as well but I'm not sure about the locals. As for the sheesha the girls do not smoke it in public here ;) - it's frowned upon. But I think exception is made for non-Libyans . I'll check with some mates about that and let you know. You can get into Libyan culture by attending Libyan social events - hmm maybe we could meet up one of these days ? let me work out the logistics ..Highlanderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16532761296990891687noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5760993.post-1137058841718203832006-01-12T11:40:00.000+02:002006-01-12T11:40:00.000+02:00Thankyou Khadija for your comment it was very nice...Thankyou Khadija for your comment it was very nice and quite consoling..... i've been told many stories about a woman driving alone at night.... people crashing into you on purpose, being stopped at road blocks so you come out of the car bla bla.... which i actually do not necessarily beleive.... but still am a bit on the careful side.....

I have a question i would like to ask.... do you know if there is anywhere in tripoli with entertainment? maybe a place where you have sheesha and enjoy some dancing or live music or anything of the sort?? I'd actually love to get more into the libyan culture... i feel so out of it!! maybe i could get some tips from you....Theahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08773998844245417694noreply@blogger.com
