Food for thought #1 for 2005

'The " expansion" of Western society or of internatinal society was achieved through the subjugation, plunder, and in some cases massacre, of colonial societies'. Fred Halliday , 1994 (p.62)

Lest we ever forget...any thoughts?

Here's Huntington's version of the same concept. Generally, I think Huntington is an Orientalist fear-mongering jack-ass who fails to site sources for many of his claims, but he does make some good points and does so elequently.

"The West won the world not by the superiority of its ideas or values or religion but rather by its superiority in applying organized violence. Westerners often forget this fact, non-Westerners never do." --Samuel P. Huntington

Hi Alan : Da Vinvi Code , highly recommended if you love theological stuff and conspiracy theories about the vatican and stuff like that but it also has a lovely human touch all set in the modern world ..enjoy!
I liked reading the Clash of Civilizations also.

He disagrees with Huntington's view that the west sees Islam as a threat. The real problem, in his view, is that most Muslim countries are being bypassed by most of the global economic changes.
